consistently, create, outcome, want
let’s break down this question: how consistently do you create the outcome you want in others?
four words worth pausing on:
- consistently
- create
- outcome
- want
consistently
people are not deterministic, but they are probabilistic. we’ve evolved to favor certain patterns—heuristics that helped us survive and reproduce.
even though we don’t live on the savannah, our instincts still do.
we still hunt, gather, explore, fight, run, play, gossip, and seek out modern versions of those same patterns today.
more importantly, we’re drawn to people who are good at them.
we want them on our team, in our tribe, in our family.
we assign them value. we give them status.
like gravity, competence is attractive.
this means influence isn’t random.
when you demonstrate and display value—consistently and in the right place—people are naturally drawn to you.
create
by definition, maneuver is motion. it’s something that you have to make happen. you produce, act, and influence.
you have to hunt, gather, explore, fight, run, play, gossip, etc. nobody can or will do it for you.
if you’re not making moves, someone else is.
and they’re the one demonstrating value. not you.
outcome
close a sale, win a vote, lose a job, pass a law, start a fight, get married, avoid a fine, make a friend, destroy an enemy.
maneuver isn’t random. every interaction has a result and will inevitably end up somewhere.
want
so here’s the hard part: do you actually know what you want?
if so, are you willing to do what it will take to get it?
and when you do, will you accept the consequences that come with it?
because if you don’t define what winning looks like, someone else will. and you’ll find yourself playing their game, not yours.
